How To Maximize Your Dropbox Security

Picture
Security has been a concern of many companies that store data in the cloud and Dropbox is the most popular cloud storage provider. Much has been discussed about cloud security and it's no secret that there have been some issues. But Dropbox has security features in place if users just implement them and use them the way they were intended to be used. While ease of use and quick accessibility is what Dropbox is known for, you don't have to give up security for these luxuries.

Use the selective sync option

Dropbox allows users to have complete control over which files and folders thay share with other users. By using the selective sync option, files can be shared on a "need to know" basis. If someone needs access to certain files but not others, use the selective sync to filter the shared data.

Two-step authentication

Two-step authentication simply means you have to correctly enter your password and then enter a code that is sent to your mobile phone. Many users don't implement this feature but they should. Passwords can be guessed and if your laptop is stolen, the thieves could have instant access to all files. With two-step authentication, the thieves would have to have access to your mobile phone as well. Some law firms integrate Dropbox with Groupdocs in order to edit documents and sign them from anywhere. The two-step authentication adds extra security to this method.

Turn on unlimited restore (Packrat)

This feature will cost a little money but it's well worth it. Data loss could be critical to a case and if files get accidentally deleted, lost or corrupted, how can you get them back? With Packrat, you get unlimited restore so Dropbox keeps a copy of all data and you can go back and restore from any point.
