Protecting Your Cloud Data With Encryption

Picture
Like any company with sensitive data stored in the cloud, data protection is a high concern to law firms. Client data is of the utmost confidentiality and must be protected in the best way possible. Most reputable cloud services have implemented encryption into their service in order to protect important information. You need to check to make sure that their encryption covers data as it's being transferred, not just while it's being stored.

Are there options if I want to handle encryption myself?

Yes, there are several good options for those who feel more secure using a third-party encryption service to ensure that all data is protected.

TrueCrypt is an extremely popular and easy-to-use encryption service. TrueCrypt encrypts entire disks and volumes which make it very useful for encrypting large amounts of data at one time, and it can even encrypt your Windows drive. However, it does not encrypt single files at a time which can be useful to may companies that would rather encrypt files separately or in real-time.

BoxCryptor encrypts files using 256-bit AES encryption and encrypts single files and folders as soon as they are created and saved. This ensures that no unencrypted files are synced to your cloud service for any amount of time since it is encrypted in real-time.

These are both good options depending on what your encryption needs or wants are, and both can be useful in preventing unauthorized access to important client or company data. Both programs work well with all of the popular cloud services. TrueCrypt is free, while BoxCryptor is free for non-commercial use on 1 drive, with prices ranging from $45-100 for upgrades.

There is a lot of nuance in encryption that is critical. My lawyer often tells me to not take the layman's approach in a legal business issue but to call him. Let me make the same comment back. TrueCrypt is a physical security mechanism in case you lose your laptop not a Cloud Security solution and Boxcryptor only works for personal backup not for collaboration. Many of the services in the Cloud are poorly secure, see this blog on the cloud gap - http://blog.laconicsecurity.com/2013/02/cloud-gap-its-real-heres-explanation.html
