Replace Your Hard Drive With Dropbox

Picture
Dropbox is becoming the ultimate platform for cloud storage, file sharing and much more, but can it actually replace the hard drive? Dropbox CEO Drew Houston certainly believes so.

"We are replacing the hard drive," he said. "I don’t mean that you’re going to unscrew your MacBook and find a Dropbox inside, but the spiritual successor to the hard drive is what we’re launching."

Dropbox launching new feature "Drop-ins"

Dropbox is improving its service by releasing two new plugins, dubbed "Drop-ins," that will help users more efficiently upload files from websites and mobile apps. Dropbox is hoping that other developers will use the plugins to create links on popular websites that implement features such as "Dave to Dropbox" or "Share from Dropbox." You may have heard how Dropbox has recently been integrated with Yahoo Mail, and this was accomplished using one of those Drop-ins called "Savor."

Houston described it as a "kind of a save button for the post-PC world."

As Dropbox implements more save-to-the-cloud and storage features which makes it easier for users to save, store and access their apps, programs, documents, photos and other files, will it be able to replace the hard drive?

Cloud data backup

As with any hard drive, you need the ability to back up all data stored on the drive. The solution to enable users to prevent data loss is cloudHQ. The cloudHQ service allows users to back up all their data from Dropbox to another cloud service such as Box, Google Drive or more. CloudHQ runs in the background and backs up data automatically so users can continue working on data stored on Dropbox without any interruption. Since the backup is continuous, all new files or revisions to existing files are instantly backed up to the backup cloud account. You back up your hard drive, if Dropbox is replacing the hard drive, you need to be prepared to back it up as well to ensure that you don't suffer any data loss.
